North Dakota First Lady Mikey L. Hoeven is deeply committed to addressing underage drinking and women's issues in the state of North Dakota.

A strong advocate for the prevention of underage drinking, she launched a statewide advertising campaign in 2001 entitled, "Let's Keep Our Kids Alcohol Free" to increase awareness of the problem of underage drinking in North Dakota and to empower young people to say no to alcohol. Television and radio ads and a statewide poster contest were developed as part of this campaign. In keeping with this effort, she is also a co-chair of the national coalition, Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free. This organization is made up of over 30 First Spouses from across the nation and is aimed at combating underage drinking in children ages 9-15 years of age. Mrs. Hoeven also sits on the North Dakota Teen Challenge Board. Teen Challenge is a faith-based ministry designed to help individuals overcome life-controlling strongholds.

As an advocate for women's issues, Mrs. Hoeven hosts two annual statewide Women's Health Summits that address the most recent health issues affecting women of all ages. The summits feature both nationally known speakers as well as speakers from across the state of North Dakota. She also sits on the Advisory Board of the North Dakota Women's Health CORE, which is charged with focusing on the needs of all women with particular emphasis toward women in rural areas as well as the needs of diverse populations, especially Native American women.

Mrs. Hoeven is also co-chair of the national "First Families Building Homes Across America Program" which is a component of Habitat for Humanity.

Mrs. Hoeven attended the University of Texas in Austin, Texas and Minot State University in Minot, North Dakota, where she received a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and a bachelor's degree in Executive Secretarial Studies.

The First Lady and Governor Hoeven have been married for 25 years and have two children, Marcela and Jack.
